History

From 1947 – 1954:
160 acres of land was purchased from Col. Joseph M. House. During this time, our two lakes were created, a new entrance road from Keenes Mill Road was constructed, the original dining hall was replaced with a new one that we call the 'old dining hall', four campsites were built with sleeping cabins and latrines. A ranger lodge, storage building (warehouse), handicraft lodge and headquarters lodge were built. A rifle range, parking lot and an entrance sign were also added.

From 1955 – 1970:
A camp directors cabin, 2 new camping cabins, an O.A. lodge, a fellowship lodge, a new rifle range, six camp sites with latrines, a new water system, and 74 acres of land were added.

From 1971 – 1980:
An Olympic sized swimming pool was built, a new dining hall (no. 3), new ranger home, two more camp sites were added. A new health lodge and council ring were built, a hot water shower for the staff area and 95 more acres of land were acquired.

From 1981 - Present:
A modern camp office was constructed (Hulsart Center), one camp site, renovated cabin, water slide, updated landscaping and a new shooting sports complex were constructed.

Today, Camp Horne is one of the outstanding Boy Scout camps of the southeast. Imagine undertaking a project of this type today with no facilities, no money and no personnel. It would seem unreasonable. If it were not for the members of the Executive Board, leaders of the community and most of all, volunteer Scout leaders facing a task with unusual enthusiasm and a great deal of faith, Camp Horne would not be the camp it is today. The Camp Horne Staff Association would like to say thanks to all the volunteers for their devotion to help youth in this area to become men of character. Camp Horne is owned and operated by the Black Warrior Council of the Boy Scouts of America and is located approximately 13 miles east of downtown Tuscaloosa. The Scout camp currently has 496 acres of land. Camp Horne is used for camping year round with weekend camping and long term camping.
