In 1924 Mr. James T. Horne donated 92 acres of land to the Black Warrior Council for the Boy Scouts of America. With the help of the Rotary, Kiwanis, Exchange and Civitan Clubs, a dining hall and six other buildings were constructed. The camp was operated until 1937 when it was abandoned in part because the only entrance into camp was through a barnyard that had not been maintained. For a number of years temporary camps were used such as Harris Lake, Yellow Creek, Oak Mountain State Park and Camp O’Rear in Jasper, Ala. The council searched for several years to locate a suitable site on which to build a Council camp. In 1946 after a thorough study and surveying a number of areas, it was decided that the Camp Horne property, with the acquisition of neighboring land, would be the most logical choice. In 1947 the Executive Board of the Black Warrior Council approved the plans for development of what is now Camp Horne.

Members gathered at Camp Horne on July 30, 2006 for the
association's first annual cookout.
